ST. IGNATIUS — In a tumultuous, back-and-forth game, Kyla Mitchell was the one steady hand the Lady Bulldogs could count on.

The Mission senior scored 22 points, with 10 of them coming in the fourth quarter to thrust the Lady Bulldogs past the Bobcats 63-53 Saturday at the Doghouse.

“I thought she (Mitchell), especially in the fourth quarter, was the one calming factor. When she got it, it just seemed to be a lot calmer, not for long, but I guess she was the anchor out there, because we were pretty excited otherwise,” Mission coach Les Rice said.

Heading into the season with only one returning starter, Rice thought it would take some time for his offense to get going. There was no way he thought he would see 63 points on the scoreboard this early, if at all, but the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of Superior’s aggressive, go-for-broke defense.

“They (Superior) were flat going for it. It was either they were stealing it or giving up a lay up. There was no in between. They just took a lot of chances, half of the time it worked for them and half of the time it worked for us,” Rice said.

Playing in only her second varsity game, Cecelia Koskela finished with 12 points. Koskela scored the last six points of the first half to give the Lady ‘Dogs an 18-10 lead at the break.

Stephanie Lewandowski finished with eight points and Bryanna Steele and Ashley Courville each added six.

Rice said the Lady Bulldogs could’ve finished with sixty points against Alberton Friday if they would have made their shots, but even on a sub-par shooting night, they still breezed to a 40-22 season-opening victory.

Lewandowski filled out the stat sheet. She finished with eight points, five rebounds, six steals and four assists. Kyla Mitchell also finished with eight points, and Steele and LaGlen Mitchell each added four points.

With “a bunch of new faces” Rice said he pretty excited about the Lady Bulldogs, 2-0 record but knows the competition is only going to get tougher. The Lady Bulldogs host the Lady Vikings Thursday and travel to Ronan Saturday.
