RONAN — Several Ronan students had outstanding finishes at a speech, drama and debate invitational hosted by Ronan High School on Jan. 15, coach Melissa Knabe said. Eleven schools from western and central Montana registered nearly 380 contestants in 15 events, so there was plenty of stiff competition.

In Memorized Public Address, Ronan’s Joseph Dresen took fifth place. Andrew Crenshaw was fifth in Humorous Solo out of 24 contestants, and Crenshaw and Josie Benedetti won third in Serious Duo. Ebru Calin was third in Serious Solo, and Elsie Bold took second and Ethen Sheumaker was third in Pantomime. Josie Benedetti and Robert Hocker won first in Classical Duo “by a pretty sizeable margin,” Knabe noted.

Ronan’s drama team finished in third place in Class A drama with 52 points; Polson was second with 55 points; and Corvallis finished in first place with 72 points.

Bigfork took top honors in class B drama.

In speech, Hamilton finished in third place with 35 points; Stevensville finished in second place with 44 points; and Columbia Falls took top honors with 130 points.

In class B speech, Loyola finished in first place with 102 points.

Knabe and the other coaches thanked those in the community who donated their time to judge rounds.

“Without you, an event such as this would not be possible,” Knabe said.
