POLSON — “Keep your palm on the chest,” Dave Wheat cautioned a student as he circled the room. Wheat taught cardio pulmonary resuscitation and first-aid at the American Red Cross Training Institute held at the Fairgrounds Fire Station April 12-14.

After two minutes of CPR, with the students alternating 30 compressions with breaths into their CPR dummies, Wheat gave them a rest and told them about two songs that provide the right rhythm for CPR, “Stayin’ Alive,” and “Another One Bites the Dust.” Since there’s a black humor about these songs, Wheat made the students promise to not sing out loud.

Approximately 10 students attended the training, coming and going throughout the weekend, according to Valeda Vandersande, Lake County Red Cross Chair and duty officer as well as disaster office supervisor.

Friday night, Wheat taught first aid and continued Saturday with CPR and disaster assessment. Saturday evening, Annette Thomas talked to the trainees about psychological first aid. Vandersande and co-instructor Jennifer Prefater took the class through case work on Sunday.

Local businesses Stageline Pizza, Driftwood Cafe, and Subway provided food for the trainees.

Attendees were Sue Henderson, Cindy Willis, John Peregoy, Bill Schreiber, Sally Lemmon, Lynn Delacaris, Michal Delgado and Wayne Vandersande.

Many have been Red Cross volunteers for a long time. Henderson said she’d been looking at her old CPR and first aid cards and has been working with Red Cross since 1997.

Peregoy began working with the Red Cross in 2003 in Kentucky.

The Red Cross is always looking for volunteers, Valeta said, and the organization plans another training in the fall. She appreciates all the volunteers, since, “All we get paid is an ‘Atta boy.’”
