Bazaars provide unique local gift items

It is the season for buying Christmas gifts, and many people like to give handmade or handcrafted presents but either don’t have the time or the talent to produce their own items.

To fill this need, bazaars are common this time of year. The People’s Center held a bazaar on Dec. 3 and 4, and there was also a Holiday Bazaar at the Ronan Community Center.

Locally-roasted coffee, bon bons, potpourri, doll star quilts, beadwork, homemade buns and cinnamon rolls, homemade soap, fudge, caramel corn, decorative items, jewelry, hand drums in all sizes, scroll saw pictures, ornaments, doll clothes are just a few of the items available at these two bazaars.

The Sew and So quilters and the Valley View Women’s Club offered chances on quilts.

Shoppers seemed happy to be out checking goods and running into friends.

One lady said she always hits the bazaars since she finds unique gifts and supports her neighbors.

The neighbors nodded and agreed, pointing at her stuffed shopping bag.

Kenny and Kathy Smith from Pablo weren’t shopping; they were selling Kenny’s skill saw art. Kenny uses a scroll saw with a tiny blade “not much bigger than a sewing machine needle” to cut pictures from birch plywood and backs them with felt. He’s been making pictures and ornaments with a scroll saw for about five years. Smith must like the work since it took 22 hours to complete a picture of Mount Rushmore with four famous Indian chiefs in front of the presidents.

For area residents still looking for last-minute gifts and baked goods, two upcoming events can help. The Mission Valley 4-H Bazaar will be on Dec. 11 at the St. Ignatius Community Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Life Savers Animal Rescue will host a Christmas baked goods sale on Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Ronan in the Hanson and Granley True Value parking lot.
