Polson’s John Brueggeman resigned from his Senate District 6 seat Monday, saying that after nearly 10 years in the state legislature, he now must focus on his career. Brueggeman works as a professional services manager for 3M’s west coast region.

A Republican first elected to the State House at age 21, Brueggeman was known for his moderate politics. Since 2005, he had served Senate District 6, an area that includes Polson, Flathead Lake’s west shore, Charlo, St. Ignatius and part of Ronan.

With Brueggeman’s resignation, Flathead and Lake County Republican committees have 45 days to come up with a list of alternates. Then county commissioners from both counties will pick a replacement from the list.

“All of us in the Senate appreciate his service to Montana for the past nine years,” president of the Senate Jim Peterson said of Brueggeman.

“The kind of career opportunity that Senator Brueggeman had doesn’t come along every day, especially in this economy. I understand his decision. We will miss his dedicated work, but all of us in the Senate wish him well in his future.”

The 2011 State Legislature convenes Jan. 3 in Helena.
