POLSON — Thanksgiving is a day for counting blessings, spending time with family and friends and eating turkey dinner. Many Polson community members chose to dine at the Polson Senior Center on Thanksgiving Day.

A few folks shared their blessings.

“I’m thankful for the snow,” Scott Heinz said.

Mary Kelley agreed, saying she was “thankful for this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful climate.”

Kelley wasn’t being sarcastic; she loves the snow.

In keeping with the snow theme, Trish Tavenner said, “I’m thankful for lots of books to read on a snowy day.”

Nancy Gordon was thankful to be sitting across the table from Kelley and Tavenner.

Christina Pittenger said, “I’m thankful for Jesus Christ and my community.”

“Camaraderie” was Dick Bratton’s answer.

Suzanne Luepke said, “I’m thankful to be in Montana.”

Not having to cook was a good reason to be thankful for Richard Menke.

“I’m thankful for friends and family,” Suzy Marshall explained.

“I’m thankful for my granddaughter, Annalyse,” Keryl Lozar said, smiling.

Sandy Farrell simply said, “Community.”

And the community pulled together for the Thanksgiving dinner. Volunteers came from area churches or just showed up and asked to be put to work. They dished up plates of food, cooked turkeys, baked pies, made rolls and salads, served coffee, water and apple juice, bused tables, washed dishes and delivered Thanksgiving dinners from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Many took a break to sample the turkey and dressing or a piece of homemade pie.

Trish Tavenner, John and Marge Davis, Jeff Devlin, Keryl Lozar, Sue and Ed Wing and the Old Time Fiddlers entertained the crowd. When the Old Time Fiddlers played, some diners even danced.

Judie Woodhouse, Dan Kanta and James Raymond spent a couple of hours delivering a Thanksgiving feast to those who couldn’t come to the center.

Despite slippery roads and lots of snow, the trio brought hot food with smiling faces.

Senior Center staffer Cathy Corrigan tallied diners, and she came up with 323 meals served, including take-out dinners for homebound people.

Dinner and the ambience were free. Any donations were divided between the Senior Center and Polson Ministerial Association’s Helping Hands Fund.
