KALISPELL — The Ronan High School Speech, Debate and Drama team competed in the Kalispell Invitation/David M. Hashley Drama Tournament on Nov. 19 and 20. Thirty-three other teams from across Montana brought their speech squads, also.

Pantomime was a good event for RHS with Elise Bold placing second followed closely by teammate Amber Metzger in third.

Students who compete in Pantomime have seven minutes to develop their character, the situation and the mood of the piece. They present a written title, the only words allowed, and may use music. The competitor must use acting, gestures and movement to draw the spectators into the performance.

Other RHS placers were Andrew Crenshaw, third place in Humorous Solo Acting, Ebru Calin, sixth place in Serious Solo Acting, and Thomas Oschman and Bradley Finley, fifth place in Serious Duo Acting.

Serious and humorous acting events are judged on the actor’s ability to portray the character, using his or her voice, body, stage movements and gestures. Actors may wear costumes and use props, but they may not use stage lighting, stage makeup, wigs or temporary hair color.

RHS Coach Melissa Knabe said the meet at Corvallis on Dec. 3-4 will be tough.

“Our team goals,” Knabe added, “ are to continue improving each week and to add to the team’s hardware at Corvallis.”
