Flathead Reservation Extension Agent Rene Kittle recently won a Montana Food Bank Network Food Security Council award, one of 15 presented in the state.

The Food Security Council recognizes individuals and organizations who have worked to reduce hunger and improve the nutritional status of Montanans, according to its website at mfbn.org/learn/public-policy/food-security-council/awards.

Rene received her award from First Lady Lisa Bullock on April 19 at the Capitol Rotunda in Helena.

Nominated by Lynn Paul, a specialist at Montana State University, Rene won the award because she and program assistant Brenda Richey teach people how to grow their own food and then how to preserve it. Besides gardening, they teach people food preservation methods: how to freeze, dry and can food, as well as jams, jellies and pickling.

Rene said the United States Department of Agriculture defines food safety as healthy delicious food for every member of the family at all times during the day throughout the year.

Linda Kittle, Rene’s supporter and mother-in-law, said, “Of course I am prejudiced, but as a food bank volunteer myself, I am happy to see people’s efforts to fight hunger get recognized.”
