POLSON — Main Street officially opened for vehicle traffic on Saturday, Nov. 6, but the street remained closed the night before as downtown merchants and other community businesses threw a block party to celebrate the Streetscape Project’s completion.

Monte, the University of Montana Grizzly mascot, livened up the scene. Accompanied by Mayor Pat DeVries, Polson City commissioners, Polson Redevelopment Agency officials and Streetscape committee members, Monte and the Polson High School Marching Band marched down to Main Street and Second Avenue for the ribbon cutting.

Then everyone lined up for free food — chili, cowboy beans, hot dogs, cornbread, even a few hamburgers, cookies, cupcakes and Pepsi were a few of the choices.

“We planned enough food for 1,000,” Marilyn Frame, owner of Polson Hallmark, said, “but we ran way out.”

Frame and Evonne O’Neill from Navigator Travel co-chaired the block party, but were quick to thank all the downtown merchants and other businesses who donated prizes, food and manpower, especially Jackie Cripe, Ken Avison and Rich Forbis.

There were 57 prizes to give away on Thursday, Frame said, but there were more than 70 by block party time.

“I think it was a great success,” O’Neill said. “I thought everybody was upbeat and in a good mood.”

Estimates of the size of the crowd range from 800 to 1,200. Suffice it to say there was a great turnout. People visited with friends and new acquaintances as they waited for the drawing, and downtown stores were jammed with shoppers and people filling out drawing slips.
