The voters have spoken, and what was likely the most hotly contested race for sheriff in Lake County's history is over.
According to unofficial results, Republican Joy Doyle defeated Independent Steve Kendley by fewer than 300 votes in the first Lake County Sheriff's race with three candidates since 1994. Doyle won with 38 percent of the vote; Kendley had 35 percent; and Democrat Dan Yonkin followed with 26 percent.
Doyle, who takes office Jan. 1, said while he would've liked more of a margin between Kendley and himself, he expected a close race.
"I would just like to thank all the people that voted," Doyle said. "Thank you for supporting me, and tell them 'Thank you' for their prayers."
Doyle said he met with his undersheriff appointee, Karey Reynolds, Tuesday night to begin planning how to implement strategies in Doyle's plan for his first year in office.
"We're gonna be primarily focusing on redoing the patrol zones ...we're gonna do a mandatory list so the back roads are patrolled," Doyle said.
Despite Kendley's disappointment in losing, he said the closeness of the race was encouraging.
"As an Independent, that's really exciting. No one knew if this was the year an Independent could do it ... I really believe in the concept for the sheriff's office to be Independent," he said.
Kendley, a domestic violence detective with the Lake County Sheriff's Office, said he plans to keep working hard and "do a great job for domestic violence victims."
“I really love what I was doing before this campaign,” he said.
A steady stream of voters Tuesday at polling places around Lake County amounted to a 68 percent voter turnout, which election clerk Beth Rowley said is about the typical number for midterm elections.
“(The) 2004 voter turnout was 88 percent, and 2008 was 79 percent, so the presidential years are much higher,” Rowley said.
