“Shop local,” is a common slogan. Now more than ever, the advice is sound for Montana economies and communities. We all have the opportunity, in fact a personal invitation, to shop locally while enjoying a celebration of the re-opening of Polson’s Main Street this Friday.

Downtown Polson is hosting a block party tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 5, from 5-8 p.m. complete with food, entertainment, prizes and sales.

This is a great opportunity to start your holiday shopping while showing support for the downtown businesses that will pay for the lion’s share of the recent streetscape project over the next 15 years through an SID assessment.

Having been limited for the most part to back alley access for the past 10 weeks, Main Street’s business owners are relieved to have their front doors open once again.

While this Friday presents a unique opportunity to support Polson businesses, there are a multitude of locally-owned businesses throughout Lake County that deserve equal attention.

Ronan’s business community is gearing up for their annual Holiday Treasures promotion – which literally rewards customers for keeping their holiday shopping local. (See future issues of the Valley Journal for coming details.)

Local businesses everywhere from Arlee to Polson are the backbone of our economy and without a doubt, the best place to shop. And I know you can count on their service.

Being in advertising sales, I see firsthand, week after week, how much and how often local business owners give. And let me tell you, it is truly impressive.

When you shop in Lake County, these businesses are more able to say “yes” when various groups or non-profit organizations seek monetary support. The impact of spending your money closer to home has far-reaching effects.

Shopping locally helps our area businesses, but it really helps you too. It’s like watering your garden. It’s easy, because it’s in your own backyard, and in the end, you reap the benefits. Benefits like downtown beautification, support of local non-profit organizations, events and school programs to name a few. Just like a garden, our communities grow stronger when they are supported at the root level. Let’s do some community gardening. See you downtown.
