ST. IGNATIUS — The Mission Police Department remains shorthanded after officer Scott Sciaretta was put on administrative leave Oct. 5 pending an investigation by the state’s Department of Criminal Investigations.

“There is no complaint” about Sciaretta’s job performance, Police Chief Tony Buff noted, and Sciaretta was not suspended. Neither Buff nor Mayor Charley Gariepy could comment on the reason for the investigation.

Until a new hire arrives or Sciaretta is reinstated, the town has only two part-time police officers.

Buff is a part-time administrative officer, and a deputy with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is also working part-time for St. Ignatius when he’s available.

The Sheriff’s Office is also taking calls for Mission Police and helping out with responses whenever they can, Buff said.

Gariepy said another full-time officer is on the way, so when Sciaretta returns, the town will have two full-time officers.

“We did hire another officer last week, and he had to give two weeks notice (at another job),” Gariepy said.
