LINCOLN – A smaller gym and lengthy road trip didn’t stop the Arlee ladies from bringing home yet another win Saturday as the Scarlet volleyball team won three of four games in Lincoln.

“We had to do a lot of adjusting,” Coach Brian Big Sam explained. “The (gym) floor is really small.”

A couple of the team’s more powerful hitters, accustomed to taking several steps when serving, were challenged by the smaller gym.

But it didn’t take the experienced team long to find their footing.

The Scarlets won the first two matches and then relaxed a little too much, resulting in a third match loss to the Lynx.

The Scarlets came back with a fourth match win to take the set.

According to Big Sam, setter Cortney Dix played well as did Mahalia Hendren who contributed 13 kills.

“Moving one of my starters to a libero position also really helped,” he added.

“Overall, the girls did really well and it’s a good confidence booster for them going into districts.”

Big Sam admitted that being tied for first (with Charlo) as they head into the conference is exciting for the Scarlets.

“We’re one of the teams people want to beat,” he said.

Comprised of mostly upperclassmen, the Scarlets have been playing together for the past three years. All that experience combined with daily practice has added up to a great season for the team.

Prior to their weekend road trip, the Scarlets defeated Valley Christian Monday, Oct. 18.

They’ll look to hold onto their number one spot as they compete in the 10C District Tournament this weekend in Charlo. Tournament play begins Friday morning.
