NINEPIPES — Installation of the Kuilix Chapter of the Montana Daughters of the American Revolution was held on May 4 at the Ninepipes Lodge. Joy Linn, Montana State DAR Regent, performed the ceremony.

Both the chapter and its members were installed, according to Bonnie Huber, regent of the Kuilix Chapter.

“It’s the first time we’ve had a chapter from Polson to Arlee and west to Thompson Falls,” Bonnie added, with approximately 40 members.

Kuilix Chapter registrar Julia Borden presented research she’d done on Kuilix, the Salish Pend d’Oreille woman for whom the chapter was named. Kuilix was born in the early 1880s, likely in Northwest Montana, west of the Continental Divide. Her name translates to Red Dress or Red One, and she was a famous warrior, healer and caretaker.

“In a time when women did not play a prominent role in Western male-oriented cultures,” Borden’s essay said, “Kuilix was identified by at least three men: Crosbie, a U.S. government representative and Pierre Jean DeSmet and Nicholas Point, both Jesuit missionaries.”

Bonnie has received many positive comments about the installation luncheon. She said “I am totally amazed at comments, telephone calls and emails I ‘ve received, saying ‘wonderful’ and ‘great.’” Another thrill for Bonnie was to see her husband, Frank Huber, in his military dress blues for the first time since he retired in 1962.

Approximately 51 people attended the installation, according to Hope Stockstad, vice regent.
