RONAN — In a city council meeting on Oct. 12, the Ronan Parks and Recreation Director and Ronan Court Clerk Jennifer Rolfsness communicated the duties of the parks department to the Ronan City Council.

During the conversation, Rolfsness asked the council if they wanted the parks department to continue moving forward with park projects.

Rolfsness currently writes and administers non-matching grants with the Safe Routes to School Program as well as several other organizations to create and keep the park clean and safe.

“I really don’t appreciate what happened last week,” Rolfsness said.

Referring to a meeting the previous week when she wasn’t present, Rolfsness said the Ronan Police Department questioned the park department’s possession of a $10,000 lawn mower.

“So I did a little update about what the parks department has been up to for the last few years,” she said. “We budgeted for the mower for two years. It’s kind a hard to mow the park without a budget.”

Council member Calvin Hardy expressed his gratitude of her hard work and dedication to the park’s development.

Hardy also commented that he wanted the city to continue to seek grants for the park.

“I want to thank you guys,” Mayor Kim Aipperspach said. “We realize that around this town, things happen everyday. When things get done around town, most people don’t realize that it was the city crew that does it.”

The council discussed the budget further, explaining that with the economical state of the country, the predicted revenue of taxes is less than last year.

In a meeting the following Tuesday, Oct. 19, Ronan City Council appointed Don Smith as the Ward 2 council member. Smith replaced Marcia Ganieany.

Following the swear in, the council discussed an approximated two planning mills that were collected by Lake County that should have been designated city planning mills.

Aipperspach said that if they receive the mills from the county, the city will designate them as planning funds and will be able to use them in individual departments as such.

The next Ronan City Council meeting will be held on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Ronan City Hall.
