GREAT FALLS — Hard work and lots of heart earned the Ronan Maiden softball team a second place finish at the B-C State Softball tournament Saturday in Great Falls.

After a huge divisional win, the Maidens headed to the state tournament and dominated three teams, securing each win by at least eight runs.

In their first game, the Maidens took a decisive 17-7 win over Columbus/Absorakee Thursday afternoon.

The next day the Maidens were pitted against Deer Lodge, who had narrowly slipped by Shepherd, 14-13. The Maidens locked up the Lady Wardens 23-2 to move into Friday afternoon’s semifinal match-up against Florence.

The Lady Falcons, previous state winners, beat Ronan 10-6, forcing Ronan to fight to get a chance to play in the championship game.

And fight they did as they slammed Columbus again, 9-1, earning the right to face Florence in the Saturday’s State championship round.

Batting first, the Maidens scored the first two runs on multiple Falcon errors.

Samantha Colman capitalized on three Florence errors, adding the first run after Jordyn Clairmont singled. McKenzie Dulmes batted in Clairmont with a RBI single, and made it to third on more Falcon errors before Florence closed the top of the first.

Although the Falcons tied the game in the second inning, the Maidens continued to play well offensively throughout the game, loading the bases and making the Falcons eventually earn a hard-fought 6-2 victory.

Ronan ended state tournament play with a respectable second place trophy, and the honor of finishing with the highest placing of any Ronan softball team in a state tournament.
