RONAN – For years and years — although no one can really say how many — Ky Bartel and a variety of volunteers have been adding color and cheer to downtown Ronan by hanging pairs of vibrant flower baskets.

Last week, Tom Goss saw Bartel and Ronna Walchuk of the Ronan Beautification committee begin to hang the heavy baskets. Goss jumped to their rescue, securing 36 hanging planters along Main Street.

“He was just concerned that he didn’t have his ‘cape’ with him,” Bartel said, laughing.

Greg Linse volunteers to keep the baskets hydrated throughout the spring and summer, traversing Main Street once a day on an ATV equipped with a water tank and a few of his gentle pups.

He also waters the trees, flower barrels, and the Visitor’s Center landscaping.

“He just takes such pride in our community,” Walchuk said.

Kathy Sykes of Moiese Greenhouse provides the flowers at a minimal cost and donates additional flora for the barrels on Main Street, according to Walchuk.

Bev’s Bloomers also contributes plants, and other local businesses and individuals help sponsor the hanging baskets.

And, the flowers get noticed.

“We had people visiting today, saying, ‘where do you get your flowers? People are seeing them,” she said.

Even Walchuk’s brothers, in town for their Ronan High School reunion, “kept saying ‘Ronan’s got flowers? Ronan’s got flowers? We never had flowers when we grew up here,’” Walchuk said. “We have our Ronan pride going on.”
