Editor,

With the filing deadline date of June 27 quickly approaching, I would like to give the citizens of Polson an update as to the progress of the upcoming campaign for the mayor position and three ward positions.

As of this writing, Polson has three candidates still unopposed and if gone unchallenged, they may be swept into office without the benefit of public debate, consideration of qualifications or any other meaningful community discourse.

The positions of the unchallenged candidates thus far include the position for the mayor as well as the city commissioners for ward 1 and ward 2. As of now, we have two city commissioner candidates who have filed for ward 3.

Although there are many different reasons for the lack of competition, it is somewhat concerning as it does seem to show a lack of interest in our local government.

Polson deserves strong leadership. Let’s not make this election a non-event. If you are available and interested or know someone who is, please join our sole candidates running for the above positions by filing at the election office in the Lake County Courthouse by June 27.

It would be ideal if all voters had a choice at the polls for every elected position.
