POLSON — Trey Kelley, 12, stepped into an airplane on June 11. While that’s not unusual for summer vacations, the reason Trey was boarding an airplane was unusual.

Trey, a rising sixth grader, and his family were flying to Helena, courtesy of the Montana Aeronautics Division, because Trey won the 2013 Montana Aviation Art contest. Only three students were chosen statewide out of the more than 600 young artists who entered art.

Trey and his family met Lieutenant Governor John Walsh, toured the capitol building and enjoyed an awards lunch before their flight back to Polson.

A fifth grader in Julie Duford’s classroom at Polson Middle School when he created his aeronautic art, Trey drew two helicopters and seven airplanes.

PMS scored a clean sweep with their students winning first, second and third in category two, grades five through eight.

The aviation art contest interest in the Polson schools stemmed from the Blue Skies Aviation Program, co-founded by students Wyatt and Willy Lytton. The Lytton boys and their parents, Pam and Lee, have gone into area schools and taught students about aviation.

“The state (Montana Aeronautics Division) said they were amazed by the aviation artwork submitted by Polson schools,” Pam said.

While he’s not sure he’ll be a pilot, Trey admitted that he does find aeronautics and aircraft fascinating.

He must because on his winning drawing, Trey included an anonymous quote — “To most people the sky is the limit, but to those who love aviation, the sky is home.”
