DIXON — The tradition and the noise of July 4 is over and we are enjoying a break in the 90-degree heat (as of this writing). Good news—the Dixon melon report is that the juicy and delicious melons are growing fine. You will probably have a sample before our Melon Day celebration on August 24.

Jim Barnes, our past president, was happily surprised by an 80th birthday picnic at the Bison Range on Sunday. Jim feels so fortunate to be celebrating this landmark, as he was very ill from cancer and had a prognosis of having just a short time to be here. Keep those birthdays coming Jim—you are appreciated.

Come in out of the heat and enjoy a good meal with friendly people at our center on Monday evenings at 5:30 and at noon for lunches on Thursdays. All ages are most welcome— it’s also a good place to bring visiting company.

The coming menu:

• Thursday, July 11: sesame elk

• Monday, July 15:  salmon loaf

• Thursday, July 18: brunch with quiche and pancakes

• Monday, July 22: turkey breast roast

Pinochle is played at our center on the fourth Monday, after dinner at about 6:30 p.m. Join us if you can.

Thanks to those who called, sent cards, brought something. I am in my fourth week post-foot-surgery and doing well. I’m in a good place to be during the heat. I’m in air-conditioned comfort with a walker to help me get around and no yard work or much housework to be done. I certainly gained an appreciation for the trials of being “off my feet” and trying to get someplace without using both feet. My gardening came to a standstill for this summer except for a couple of cherry tomato plants on my deck.

Enjoy what you are able to the rest of this season. There’s so much going on in our valleys. I’ll bet there’s a senior or neighbor you know who would love a little ride to enjoy our great area and to be amongst people.
