Sweet dark red cherries are ripening around Flathead Lake, but cherries are showing up in a lot of downtown Polson stores, too.

Cherry fabric, that is, pieced and quilted by area seamstresses for the Flathead Cherry Festival Quilt Show.

This year’s quilt show drew 10 entries, displayed in Main Street businesses, according to Susan Brown, who works at All in Stitches. Colors in the quilts ranged from pink and red to yellow and black and white.

Locals and visitors can vote for people’s choice awards by picking up a ballot at All In Stitches, Jackie M’s Footwear, First Resort, Gull Printing, Inc. and Printing, Crow’s Nest Art Gallery and Frame Shop, Terrace Floral and Polson Physical Therapy.

“Every place that has a quilt has ballots,” said Kathy Klinge, All in Stitches manager. “Completed ballots must be returned to All in Stitches.

Klinge said about the same number of quilts as usual were entered, but this year the show was  limited to just quilts.

Two strip quilts, one with cheery cherry fabrics in pinks, blues, reds and yellows and one with 50s prints, are hanging in the All in Stitches window. Across the street at Gull Printing, the quilt in the window is black and white with accents of cherry red and green. A yellow quilt with appliqué cherries warms up the wall at The Terrace.

Quilters sometimes collect fabric for years  for a special quilt. For example, cherry prints may not be available every year. This year there is a bumper crop of cherry quilts.
