POLSON — Petunias spill from planters, roses scent the air, geraniums and sunflowers reach for the sun while begonias and impatiens bloom in shady spots.

Late July is a great time for the Envision Polson Beautification Committee to hold their contest for best blooming business and best blooming residence in Polson.

“We want people to know there are many of us in this community who value the work they put into making their business or their home beautiful. It makes it so much nicer for those of us who live here and visitors,” said Mary Jensen, chair of the Beautification Committee.

Committee members Penny Jarecki, Agnes Rinehart and Jane Larson joined Jensen to judge the contest after all the nominations were collected. Several of the 20 nominees were submitted more than once, Jensen said.

Then the judges drove around, looked at the yards and businesses and met to choose the winners.

Marshell Fox, 1903 Hillcrest Drive, won for best blooming residence, and Richwine’s Burgerville picked up first for best blooming business.

Fox said she just loves flowers.

“When I retired and went to work at Mission View Greenhouse, that just enhanced it,” Fox said.

Marcia Moen at Richwine’s Burgerville said her favorite of all her flowers is her dad’s wheelbarrow filled with blooming plants and a sign saying “Enoch’s Garden.”

“Mom sold (the wheelbarrow) on me,” Moen said.

When Moen asked about the wheelbarrow, Lucille Richwine bought the wheelbarrow back for twice what she sold it for, and Moen heaped the old wheelbarrow with flowers.

Second place in best blooming residence went to Kim Christopher, 310 Seventh Street E., and third place went to Karen Lenz, 304 Third Avenue.

Lakeview Family Chiropractic, 212 Second Avenue, picked up second for best blooming business with the Hallmark Store/Navigator Travel corner of Main Street and Third Avenue E. earning third.

Each business and residence will receive a permanent sign. Daniel Smith from Polson Heart and Soul designed the signs, the nomination forms and the thank-you notes the committee is sending out.
