POLSON — The Polson School Board of Trustees awarded the roofing contract on Polson High School to Progressive Roofing in Missoula. Progressive bid was $475,000 and Missoula Sheet Metal bid $494,735.

Progressive Roofing had done the first third of the roof, according to Dan Kinyon, maintenance director.

Unfortunately, the company needs to order material so construction won’t begin for three weeks. That means the roofing will be taking place when PHS students begin the 2013-14 school year. Completion date is set for Oct. 18.

In other business, Polson Middle School Principal Brian Adams tendered his resignation on July 8. To fill the slot, District Superintendent Linda Reksten said only six applications were received, and she felt “we didn’t have a very good pool.”

She talked to Tom DiGiallonardo, PMS Grades 5 and 6 Principal, and he is willing to be an interim principal for the entire middle school for one year. A number of school district employees have administrative certification and could serve as an interim assistant principal. Reksten plans an interview panel from PMS teachers chaired by Bill Appleton, District Curriculum Director. The panel will select the top two candidates, and then Reksten will interview them and chose an interim assistant principal by the first of August.

In other business, the trustees denied a request by Adams for severance pay.

The district has set a date by which employees need to resign, and Adams missed that date with his July 8 resignation.

Reksten recommended the board not grant the request.

The board also okayed submission of a quality schools planning grant although Trustee John Triolo was vocal in his opposition. Triolo said he’s not sure the district needs to go through a planning grant “ to tell us Cherry Valley’s boiler needs replacing or to tell us we need more room.”

He said he though the sample grant was not very specific on the educational aspect but impressive on the facilities piece. He also brought up staff absence due to planning meetings.

“I would rather see us focus on learning,” Triolo said.

The next regularly scheduled school board meeting is scheduled for Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the administration building boardroom.
