POLSON — A vehicle fire sparked a grass fire on Polson Hill on July 26. The afternoon blaze, with flame heights up to six feet, burned approximately two acres.

The fire headed west up the hill towards the bike path, and luckily the bike path stopped its progress, according to Karen Sargeant, Polson Fire Department Public Information Officer.

Sargeant, who was on scene at the bike path, noted that Polson Fire Chief John Fairchild was concerned that if the flames jumped the bike path several residences could have been in danger.

“It is just one of those things that happens when it’s hot and dry,” Sargeant said.

Urging people to be careful, Sargeant added that as of Aug. 1, the Flathead Reservation will be under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, which means no smoking outside a vehicle unless all the combustible fuels are cleared away, and campfires only in designated campsites.
