RONAN — Deuce stood chewing his cud in the beef barn at the Lake County Fair, not too concerned about what was going on around him. Owned and shown by Hallie Sohr, Deuce, a black steer, won grand champion market beef at this year’s Lake County Fair.

Hallie, 13, said her parents, Teresa and Clint, support her every way they can, although that doesn’t extend to feeding the black steer.

She’s done a good job pouring the grain and hay to Deuce since he tipped the scales at 1,390 pounds at weigh-in. His beginning weight was 945 pounds so he gained an average of 2.28 pounds per day. At the Lake County 4-H sale, Deuce sold for $4.75 per pound to Treasure State Concrete.

This is the second year Hallie has shown a steer.

“Deuce came out of our herd,” Hallie said.

She likes steers because they are more of a challenge than sheep or pigs.

As for Deuce, he’s not temperamental at all, Hallie noted.

Although she didn’t know Deuce would take the grand champion ribbon, “I knew he was going to be high (in the placings,)” Hallie said, since the big black steer had done well at the four other steer shows the Sohrs hauled him to this summer.

Besides Deuce, Hallie showed four other animals at the fair — two heifers and one cow and calf.

Besides being a 4-H club member, Hallie, who’ll attend eighth grade in Ronan this fall, also rodeos. She runs barrels and ropes.

She said she’ll definitely raise another steer next year.
