DIXON — Can you believe Melon Days are almost here, which also means the Sanders County Fair is next, and then it’s “back-to-school.” I used to dread those back-to-school ads, which start in July as a reminder that my long vacation would soon come to an end. It took many years before I stopped dreading going back to school and dreaming that I slept in, or my classroom was moved and I couldn’t find it. Blessings and courage to our next generations who all start a new year with challenges and hopes of making a difference. Times have changed.

I hear the Dixon Melons are in the stores, but I haven’t yet sampled one. What a fun time in this part of Western Montana. Those melons really put our little town on the map. Facebook has a site that tells all about our special melon days, gives the schedule of events, and a little history, etc. One of our seniors, Terry Andres, is shown on his John Deere, in the parade. See if you can access it. The Melon Days event that impacts our senior center the most will be the special dinner. There you get to see all the friends and neighbors you might not get to visit with any other time of the year.

Much appreciation goes to Diane Lindquist for capably filling in as cook while Diane Groh took a much-deserved break. She was our cook previously and already familiar with the kitchen. Our center is known for serving great meals, come join us. Meals are on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and at noon on Thursdays.

The menu coming up will be:

•  Thursday, Aug. 15: Brunch for lunch - breakfast burrito, French toast, and bacon

•  Monday, Aug. 19: Tilapia (fish)

•  Thursday, Aug. 22: veggie soup and turkey sandwiches

•  Monday, Aug. 26:  stuffed peppers, coleslaw

•  Thursday, Aug. 29:  baked chicken

All ages are welcome and you can even take some home. Meals are only $4.

Our last pinochle scores had Marion Sands as high scorer, May Howell with the lowest and Bob Cook had the most pinochles. The door prize went to Anita Siebert. This traveling group meets every fourth Monday at our center. New players are always welcome.

This is the season for trips and family reunions. Barbara Cripps recently enjoyed a trip to Lewiston and Roy and Delene Tufly traveled to Oregon. I was very happy to be with all four of my grandchildren who I got together with in Missoula.  There’s lots of summer weather left, so enjoy what pleases you.
