Weather was great for Polson High School’s homecoming week held Sept. 27 to Oct. 1. Students kept school spirit up around PHS with different dress-up days, such as pajama day on Monday, twin day/celebrity day on Tuesday, gender bender/80’s day on Wednesday, color wars on Thursday and purple and gold day on Friday.

In sports events during homecoming week, the Polson volleyball teams won all three matches against the Columbia Falls Wildkats on Sept. 30.

The Polson boys soccer team beat Whitefish 2-1 on Sept. 30, a big win since it the first time the Polson boys have beaten Whitefish two times in one season. The Polson girls soccer team did not fare so well, even with a strong rally the girls lost to Whitefish 4-0.

The spirit award, a combination of points for dress-up days, the spirit wall competition and the parade, went to the seniors with the junior class finishing second, the freshmen third and the sophomores fourth.

The class of 2011 won the spirit wall competition. During the outdoor pep rally on Thursday, Sept. 30, the freshmen scooped up some points by aceing the tug-of-war and the relay race. The frosh also won the float contest.

The parade, with about 20 floats, began at 2:30 p.m. between the PHS and the Polson Middle School and continued past Cherry Valley School and over past Linderman School so all the students could wave, cheer on the Pirates and pick up some candy.

After the tailgate party, put on as a fundraiser by the Polson Wrestling Club, the Polson Pirate football team took on the Columbia Falls Wildcats at 7 p.m. The Wildcats won the game in the last 56 seconds by a score of 25-20.

Homecoming queen candidates were Dani Howlett, Breanne Kelley, Kendyall Rochin and Kodi Woods. King candidates were Jesse Alfiero, Kyle Bagnell, Sheldon Fisher and Sean Hart.

At half-time of the football game, Breanne Kelley and Sheldon Fisher were crowned homecoming queen and king. Kelley is the daughter of Randy and Tami Kelley while Fisher is the son of Lanneil Fisher and Woody Red Cloud.

After the game, the festivities continued with a homecoming dance from 9:30 to 11:30 with Nation Garza as the DJ.

PHS vice principal Shawn Hendrickson said school participation for homecoming week was the best in the two years he’s been here. Teachers who’ve been at PHS for years, such as Bob Gunderson, who has taught at PHS for 35 years, said it was the best homecoming PHS ever had, Hendrickson added.
