DIXON — For more than 20 years, the charming burg of Dixon has celebrated the harvest of their succulent melons with a festival. The event begins this Friday evening, Aug. 23, with a dance, followed Saturday morning by a Firemen’s breakfast, a run/walk, 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a horseshoe tournament in honor of the late Doug Morigeau. The 11 a.m. parade is a traffic-stopper on Highway 200, and precedes the Farmer’s Olympics — a barrel of laughs as contestants run through an obstacle course of ranch-related work.
The afternoon continues with a lawn tractor race (no blades, please), and children are sure to love the melon eating contest, kids games and 18-and-under rodeo. Throughout the day, vendors sell crafts and food, and there are silent auctions, raffles, and dinner cooked up by the Dixon seniors.
And of course, follow the scent of ripened fruit to purchase melons displayed by the truckload.
