POLSON — During city manager comments at the Aug. 19 city commission meeting, Interim City Manager Karen Sargeant said she attended the first meeting of the Skyline Drive grand opening committee. The group plans a ribbon cutting and a meet-and-greet for the completion of the $12-million project.

Polson Street Superintendent Terry Gembala said paving on the Skyline project will begin this week since working workers are finishing up details on some curbing.

“Sometime this week, you’ll start to see some black up there,” Gembala said.

Polson’s Main Street warranty work including concrete panels and curbing work has been completed, Sargeant said, to Polson City Engineer Shari Johnson.

Sealing cracks has begun, and the work will continue every Friday until it’s finished.

The contract with McCrumb Construction was signed on Aug. 14, and McCrumb started work on Aug. 16, Sargeant said. The firm is setting pilings and will be working on the city dock next week.

The Street Department has been working with Lake County on paving the parking lot at the Lake County Court House. Gembala and his crew also made a small parking area on the south side of Seventh Avenue across from the entrance to the Carol Sherick Trail so people will have a place to park, Sargeant said.

Sargeant also reported that the membership of the Polson Volunteer Fire Department donated money to the West, Texas Volunteer Fire Department “for financial aid and moral support.” The Texas department fought the huge fertilizer plant fire in April. She noted the funds came from the membership and not tax money.

Prothman, the northwest based consulting firm handling the search for Polson’s next city manager, will hold a Skype meeting with the Polson City Commissioners on Aug. 20. Since the meeting deals with the 37 applicants for the position, it will be an executive session.

Greg Prothman winnowed the applicants down to eight candidates, and the commissioners will be considering those eight candidates as well as any others they like from the slush pile.

Sargeant also introduced Tom Fleming, newly hired clerk for the building and planning department.

Polson City Treasurer Cindy Dooley said she plans a public preliminary budget hearing before the next city commission meeting on Sept. 4. Budget information will be available on the city’s website by the middle of the week of Aug. 26-30, and a hard copy of the preliminary budget will be available at Polson City Hall.

The Commissioners passed Resolution No. 1047, adopting a policy concerning compliance with the Internal Revenue Service and the bonds issued for the walkway connecting Riverside and Sacajawea Parks and the city dock project. The bonds need to retain their tax-exempt status.

The next city commission meeting will be held Sept. 4, a Wednesday since Labor Day is Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
