The Valley Journal welcomes letters to the editor that are submitted within the parameters of our established guidelines. (See sidebar box below).

As a newspaper, we are a platform for free speech. Some letters are more difficult to read than others, yet as a newspaper, we do not take sides nor do we pull letters because we, as individuals, may not agree with the writer’s viewpoint.

Throughout the past months, we have published hundreds of letters dealing with issues on all sides of the Water Compact, as well as other issues of importance in Lake County.

This week many submissions have overstepped the thin line of good taste. They are written with spite and venomous arrogance, on the border of threats and libel.

When a letter writer attacks a person’s character, that is not acceptable for the Valley Journal. If the writer does not agree with a viewpoint or another writer’s stand on an issue, feel free to address the issue. But if, in your letter, you choose to attack the person, your letter will not be published. Please stick to the issues.

Letters policy:

Letters to the editor are welcome. The decision to publish letters is made by the editor.

Letters may be edited for content or length, or may not be published if considered libelous, in poor taste, spiteful, self-promotional or of limited interest to the general readership. Space limitations also dictate when or if letters will be published.

Letters must be signed by the author and name, address and phone number must be included – phone number is for verification purposes only. Letters from organizations must include the name of at least one author.

Letters must be 350 words or less. Exceptions may be made for guest columns on a case-by-case basis. Please limit “thank you” letters to four people/organizations or less. Letters must be submitted by Friday at  5 p.m. to publish the  following week.
