Polson’s golf team took home first place finishes for both the boys’ and girls’ teams at their hometown Polson Invitational Tournament. Through the drizzle and wet conditions, Pirate golfers kept their footing and shot straight.
Tuesday’s tournament included two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams with four golfers per team from Polson, Columbia Falls, Stevensville, and Browning.
Pirate boys took four of the top five spots with a combined score of 353 on the par 72 Polson Bay Golf Club course.
Senior Alex Killian got the win shooting an 82.
“I want to succeed as a boys team this year. We have a lot of seniors and it would mean a lot to me and the guys,” Killian said. “Personally my goal is to put up two 70 scores at state and place (in the) top 10.”
Coach William Owen is pleased with how the boys are coming along.
“Alex Killian is playing pretty tough,” Owen said about the tournament leader.
Junior Reno Lindesmith shot 89 and senior Dalton Noyes shot 90, taking third and fourth out of eight.
The Lady Pirates dominated on the links with a combined score of 368, putting up one of the lowest scores of the season, according to Owen, and owning the top five spots.
Senior Jaylin Kenney placed first with a score of 88. Junior Peyton Anderson bested her season score by four, shooting a 90 and placing second in the tournament.
Though hard work is ahead, Polson golfers will tough out the elements with a mutual goal in sight: taking top spots on the board at state.
Owen said he is pleased with the kids’ improvements.
“I’m pretty excited about the way they’re playing,” he said.
Pirates have a traveling schedule ahead, visiting Columbia Falls, Eureka, and Kalispell. They return home on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Polson will host the state tournament Polson Oct. 4-5.
