Mae J. Johnson Fowler

MOIESE – Mae J. Johnson Fowler passed away in her home at Sun City, Ariz., Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 from esophageal cancer.

Mae was born to LeRoy and Nellie Anderson Johnson at Diamond Lake, Wash. On Aug. 12, 1916. The family moved several places while her father was logging and had a brief try at farming in Conrad until the drought. They then moved back to Stark to resume logging and living in the logging camp. Mae attended school in Frenchtown, Dixon, then North Moiese until 1928 when she relocated to South Moiese. High school was split, with the first two years in Dixon, and then the final two years she was bussed to Charlo.

Mae married Harold Fowler in a double ceremony with her brother Lester Johnson and Marjorie Estep on Jan. 13, 1934 in Missoula. They ranched with his mother Ida and stepfather Walter Stiner in the Moiese Valley.

Mae was active in the TA, Mo Val Gals, Moiese Grange 118 and the 4H Banana Belt Workers. She enjoyed plays, square dancing and many hands of cards. In 1963 they sold the ranch and moved to Bigfork where they owned and operated the Sun Set Cabins, and Harold worked for Pacific Power and Light until his retirement. Then they wintered in Earp, Calif. Mae was a member of the Rebeccas in Bigfork and Sun City, Ariz., where she and her daughter Linda shared a home. While in Sun City, Mae played cards three times a week and Sundays were reserved for breakfast with her brother Ralph and friend Ruth Turner.

Mae is preceded in death by her parents LeRoy and Nellie Johnson, sister Dorothy Stanford, brothers Kenneth and Robert. She is survived by daughters Julia F. (Edward) Krantz of Charlo; Linda L. Hudgins of Sun City, Ariz., one son H. Kenneth (Marcia) Fowler of Yuma, Ariz.; sister Lois Harris of Missoula; brothers Lester Johnson Hamilton and Ralph Johnson of Sun City, Ariz.; brother-in-law Edward Fowler of Missoula; grandchildren Keith (Diane) Krantz and Max Krantz of Charlo; Karen (Nick) Brian Hudgins, Lake Stevens, Wash.; Marcie (TJ) Nash, Liberty Center, Ohio; Scott Fowler and Bruce (Emily) Fowler of Burlington, Wash.; along with 19 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration of Mae’s life will be held in 2011. The family suggests memorials be made in Mae’s name to the American Cancer Society or the Charlo-Moiese Senior Citizens of Charlo.
