Editor,

I want to publicly encourage Polson’s own John Mercer to consider running for the Montana senate seat being vacated by Max Baucus.

As the former speaker of the Montana house, John demonstrated a clear ability at mastering arcane legislative detail and also the skill to work across the aisle with democrats. Those are two trails that would serve well in the U.S. senate, which clearly needs a path out of partisan gridlock.

While John tended towards fiscal conservatism and as an independent I am more moderately inclined, I still think he has the give and take ability that the U.S. senate sorely needs.

I am surprised Mr. Mercer’s name hasn’t come up in the speculative bubble surrounding this seat, although I’m pretty sure he hasn’t encouraged it.

But I hope he will at least think about it now.

Polson
