Editor,

Has anyone taken headcount lately? I just did. The thriving metropolis of Polson can afford a city manager, a mayor (who smiles, frowns, giggles and watches the three-minute clock like a hawk), six commissioners (who vote as one, 99 percent of the time), a city attorney (who sometimes actually shows up at city council meetings, although will not offer an opinion on anything), a treasurer and a clerk or two; not to mention a chief of police and a fire chief and all the department heads the city can bear. The citizenry must be feeling pretty cosmopolitan with this enormous “government” at their disposal.

Shoot, the city’s even beginning to compete with her larger siblings in the crime world, although no one has the time to publish the daily deluge of offenses — so, who is keeping track? Even the city council is setting new records ignoring rules, regulations, procedures and laws with apparent impunity. Does anyone feel like maybe the town’s inhabitants deserve a break from all this? Are you tired of your city government ignoring you?

Well, you have a chance to change that a bit with the upcoming elections. You have two fellows running for mayor and commissioner who deserve a strong look. Bob Fulton brings a sense of the city and its voice with him. He’s not a social butterfly or a volunteer; he’s serious about how this city is run with the public’s voice in it. Murat Kalinyaprak has attended more city council meetings than most of the commissioners combined. Murat brings a more complete understanding of the true procedures and laws to the table, and a proven desire to live by them, than apparently even your city attorney. When listened to, he has saved the city more wasted money than all the commissioners or department heads ever considered.

Two names to remember on your ballot: Bob Fulton and Murat Kalinyaprak (okay, so Murat’s last name is tough, just think “Murat”). Do you want real government or just a party?
