ARLEE – If you ask Harold and Vi Tanner the secret to a successful marriage, they have few words to impart, despite the recent celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary.

“It just worked out,” said Vi Tanner, who was 18 when she and Harold, who was 20 at the time, wed.

Harold offered the exact same, word for word explanation of the long lasting relationship, as did their son Rex, who was born when Harold was serving overseas during World War II.

“They’ve always just worked together,” Rex Tanner said. “I couldn’t ask for finer parents.”

The couple farmed pigs for many years in Arlee and were instrumental in building part of the senior citizens center, because, as Vi put it: “My folks were members and we wanted to help out.”

Throughout the community, the couple is known for their generosity and constant companionship. At a celebration at the Senior Center numerous friends and family had the same words to describe the pair: always together.

“There were some stormy days, but it was never that bad,” Harold said. “I told her, it’s just like reading a book. We’re on the last chapter. Who knows, we might make it another year.”
