Editor,

Just how important are the Tribal Council primary elections?

Many of us are negligent in voting during any primary election. In our busy lives, it is tempting to ignore the primary elections. We justify this by promising ourselves that we will vote in the general elections, so what does it matter?

It matters. It is time to make some positive changes in our tribal government.

Attending primary candidate forums is an opportunity to get to really know the candidates who are seriously committed to serving on the Tribal Council. Interview these people as if you were personally hiring someone to protect you and your family’s best interests and future. Basically, that is exactly what you are doing. Remember, you are their employer.

We can’t expect positive change in our governments if we don’t put responsible, ethical, and qualified candidates on the ballot. Voting for someone just because they are a friend or relative is not responsible voting. Neither is voting on hearsay nor rumors. Get the facts first hand from the candidates themselves.

Suggested crucial questions to ask the candidates:

Do you know the tribal constitution and bylaws and are you willing to follow them? Are you open to constitutional change? Do you believe that the council should not be involved in the operations of the Tribal Justice system? On large monetary issues, do you feel the membership should be able to vote on them before the council makes a decision? Incumbents: how did you vote on the past vital issues? New candidates: How would you have voted on these same issues? How important will membership input be on your decision making?

Membership, let’s make this the record voter turnout for the primary Tribal election. Why? Because we are concerned and care about our families’ future and the future of the Tribe. We need positive change.

Native Ink Media Group members Joyce Mitchell, Joelene Frey, Donna Orr, Janice Cordier, Elden White, and Sue Yerian strongly encourage the membership to take the time to attend candidate forums and vote in the upcoming Tribal Council primary election.
