ST. IGNATIUS — Blue and white were the colors of the week in St. Ignatius as the Mission Bulldogs took school spirit to a new level in preparation for Friday night’s homecoming football game.
And their efforts paid off when the Bulldogs blew the Thompson Falls Bluehawks out of the air in a 40-13 victory — Mission’s first win over Thompson Falls in nearly a decade.
“It was so awesome,” high school secretary Brenda Arlint said. “It was so much fun; it was a great homecoming all around.”
Friendly competitions throughout the week pitted high school classes against each other in a car push, “Minute to Win It” contest, tug-of-war and dodgeball.
“Out of those competitions, the juniors came out on top,” Arlint noted.
The juniors also won locker-decorating and skit contests, while the sophomores took first place in a poster-making contest for the Lady Bulldogs’ homecoming volleyball game Thursday evening. Freshmen got the best float award from Friday’s homecoming parade, and the seniors were named dress-up winners for the week.
In the middle school, a fierce competition for a good cause ended at noon Friday, with the seventh-graders dominating in a food drive for the Mission Valley Food Pantry. The sixth grade turned in 236 food items; the seventh-graders had 1,014; and eighth-graders counted 773. The winning class will celebrate with a pizza party, teacher Dorothy VonHoltum said, noting that last year’s food drive totaled 878 items for the whole middle school. The increase this year came from a competitive spirit and “hopefully just wanting to help,” VonHoltum said.
Arlen Tellier and Adessa Durglo were crowned homecoming king and queen at half-time Friday.
