POLSON — The Lake County Compensation Board and the Lake County Commissioners have been grappling with a way to give elected officials with experience more money. In a meeting at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, the board, after much discussion, passed two motions for the commissioners to peruse.
The commissioners decided on Sept. 28 to give a 50-cent raise in base pay for all elected county officials. Longevity pay was raised from 1 percent to 2 percent per year, capped at 20 percent for all existing elected officials retroactive to Jan. 1, 2010.
Newly elected county personnel will be capped at 20 percent also, but since they will be sworn in on Jan. 1, 2011, they will not be eligible for longevity pay until they have been on the job for a year. It will take them 11 years to get to the cap.
Four county officials and two community members serve on the compensation board. They include: Patti Duford-Kugler, Lake County Treasurer; Ruth Hodges, Lake County Clerk and Recorder; Lucky Larson, Lake County Sheriff; Mitch Young, Lake County Attorney, and community members Dennis Lewis and Bob Long. Larson was not present at the meeting.
The county already had budgeted enough money for a 50-cent-per-hour raise for non-elected employees at each department head’s discretion.
