RONAN — A failed transformer and regulator at a Mission Valley Power substation on Mink Lane put 900 residents out of power and nearly stopped the Ronan Chiefs from playing their homecoming football game Friday night.

“It created a mess — it was right after the homecoming parade,” Ronan Fire Chief Mark Clary said.

The lid blew off the transformer a little after 4:30 p.m. — just after the fire department finished driving the parade route down Main Street. Firefighters blocked off the area around the substation while MVP workers dealt with the problem. The outage caused a five-minute delay in the football game, but power was restored to the school just in time, Clary said.

“(Mission Valley Power) did a nice job getting the lights back on for the game,” he said.

The rest of Ronan and some customers on Terrace Lake Road and in the North Crow area were out of power for a little more than two hours, MVP’s superintendent of operations Craig Morigeau said.

“We transferred three circuits that were affected … three circuits are handling the load until we get that transformer repaired or replaced,” he said.

Morigeau said he’s not sure what caused the problem, but repair work was slated to start Tuesday.
