RONAN — Valent Maxwell, 54, of Klawok, Alaska is scheduled to take over as Ronan chief of police on Oct. 28.

Mayor Kim Aipperspach said the city council interviewed three candidates for the position, after receiving five applications.

“It was hard to decide who was best,” Aipperspach said.

Maxwell is a “pretty decent guy” who seems to be “highly ethical,” Aipperspach said.

Maxwell is originally from Idaho, but spent the past 14 years in Alaska. He worked for the Alaska Department of Public Safety on Kodiak Island as a public safety officer for 10 years. He then moved to Klawok to work for the police department, where he is currently a sergeant. Maxwell has also taught safety and drug programs to schoolchildren during his 23 years in law enforcement.

He said the opportunity to work in Ronan presented itself at a time when he wanted to be closer to family.

“It’s time to come home,” Maxwell said.

He traveled through Ronan on trips to Glacier National Park and remembered the town’s friendly people and unforgettable scenery.

“I always felt Ronan was such an absolutely beautiful location,” Maxwell said.

He looks forward to arriving on Oct. 23.

“I’m looking forward to starting or continuing a department that is part of the community,” he said.
