DRUMMOND — The Scarlets 12-game win streak came to a screeching halt in Drummond Saturday.

The Scarlets entered the match with the Lady Trojans on a four-match win streak, but were quickly sent home with a 25-8, 25-13, 25-20 loss.

“We just weren’t ready to play. We didn’t start playing until the third game and by that time it was too late,” Arlee coach Brian Big Sam said.

Big Sam is hoping that the Scarlets use the lopsided loss as motivation.

“The next time we would play them will be divisionals, so that’s where we are going to meet them,” Big Sam said. “It was a good team to play. They’re the caliber of team we’re going to meet at the divisionals, so it shows the girls what they need to work on to be ready.”

The Scarlets had no answer for Lady Trojan middle hitter Rhianna Pool, who had a match-high 10 kills, which was two more than the all the Scarlets combined. Big Sam said if there wasn’t a blocker at the net, Pool would crush the ball and if the Scarlets put blockers in front of her, she would just tip the ball to an open space – something that he has been trying to get his players to do.

The Scarlets only had eight kills in the match, with Cassandra Kline and Cortney Dix leading the team with two apiece.

The Scarlets’ back row had problems handling the Lady Trojans’ serves and gave up 21 aces in just three sets. The Scarlets, who averaged 25 aces in their two victories earlier in the week, only finished with five. Kline’s two led the team.

Before the 25-8 loss to open the match against the Lady Trojans, the Scarlets last loss was a 25-22 loss in game two against Philipsburg Sept. 2, since that time they had won 12 straight games, outscoring their opponents 290-to-156 in the process. Six of those wins included two straight-set, road victories earlier in the week. The Scarlets started the week with a 25-8, 25-15, 25-8 rout of the Lady Panthers in Alberton and took care of the Lady Tigers 25-17, 25-16, 25-10 for a conference victory in St. Regis Friday.

In Alberton, it was the Lady Panthers who had trouble returning serves. The Scarlets finished with 28 aces with Kline leading the way with eight. There wasn’t much need for an Arlee attack, and the Scarlets only had nine kills in the match. Melissa Ivanoff led the way with four.

The Scarlets only allowed three kills. Maria Pablo led the defense with eight digs.

On Friday, the Scarlets had extra motivation to take care of the Lady Tigers in three sets. Wanting to get back in time to watch the Warrior-Viking football game, the Scarlets hurried to beat St. Regis and were back in Arlee to watch the second half of the game.

For the second straight game, Ivanoff led the Scarlets’ offense. The senior finished with five of the team’s 11 kills. And for the second straight night, the Scarlets’ serving accounted for most of their offense. Arlee finished with 22 aces. Dix had a match-high eight aces. She also had match highs in blocks and assists, finishing with three blocks and eight assists.

The Scarlets (4-1) will host the Spike It Tournament Saturday.
