Editor,

It’s a rare candidate running for political office whose love of community surpasses his/her own political aspirations. But Bob Fulton has quietly demonstrated to so many that he is indeed that rare individual, in writing his eloquent letter “Polson will be in good hands,” published in the Oct. 9 edition of the Valley Journal. In reassuring Polson residents that they will be well served, regardless of whether he or one of the other two mayoral candidates is elected, Bob shows us all with King Solomon-like wisdom that his deep love and commitment to the Polson community rise above all else.

Bob’s letter has reached Colorado in the two weeks since it was published, and it has been sent repeatedly to many of our state’s elected officials, including Governor John Hickenlooper and numerous others running for or currently holding state or local public office. At a time when partisan politics divide our nation and many of Colorado’s political campaigns have once again become vitriolic, Bob has quietly reminded us all of the importance of unselfish love and commitment to community. Amazingly, his words seem to have had a positive impact on several of our local races, bringing a tone of civility to campaigns now that was absent just a few weeks ago. For his positive influence from states away, we owe Bob a debt of gratitude.

The ability to inspire, to listen to all points of view, and to then build consensus are critical skills that an effective leader must possess. The many letters written in support of Bob’s candidacy speak to his depth of knowledge, his character and integrity, and his many years of service to community — and as importantly, to these exemplary qualities of leadership that his words and actions so completely embody.

Although Polson may be in good hands no matter what the election outcome may ultimately be, the best and most capable hands surely appear to be those belonging to Bob Fulton.
