POLSON — Jeff Key, a transportation planner from Camp Dresser and McKee, Inc., in Helena, his assistant Naomi Fossen and Sheila Ludlow, Montana Department of Transportation, hosted an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Polson City Library. The open house allowed interested parties to question and give opinions to Key, Fossen and Ludlow about the U.S. Highway 93 Polson Corridor Study and the Polson Area Transportation Plan.

About 60 people packed the room when Key gave a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Key said the corridor study deals with a portion of Hwy. 93 from approximately Caffrey Road north to the Rocky Point Road intersection.

“We have to understand the purpose of the roadway,” Key explained.

The study team includes the City of Polson, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Lake County, the Federal Highway Administration and the Montana Department of Transportation.

The corridor study “will determine cost effective ways to address transportation needs along Hwy. 93 through Polson and also examine the feasibility of a Hwy. 93 alternate route through Polson” according to the Hwy. 93 Polson Corridor Newsletter passed out at the meeting.

Key said Quantm software, a corridor and route alignment planning tool, will be used to compare the routes. The study should take approximately 12 months. For more information, take a look at the website at www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/polsoncorridorstudy

The Polson Area Transportation Plan will “set the course of action for growth and the transportation system,” Key said.

The plan will study such information as intersections along Hwy. 93 in Polson, late summer traffic, school traffic, parking, bike lanes and paths, signage and other transportation/land use relationships. It also looks at existing issues such as schools and hospitals. Using all this data, the plan will put future demands into a model to see what it will look like in 20 years.

Although, Key said, “Trying to plan 20 years out is a job.”

A website has been established for the transportation plan at www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/polsontransplan.

People with a special interest in either the corridor study or the transportation plan can ask to be put on the mailing list. Please submit your name and contact information to Jeff Key at KeyJA@cdm.com to be put on the mailing list. Please also specify the U.S. 93 Polson Corridor Study or Polson Area Transportation Plan.
