MISSOULA — There were perfect conditions for golfing last week as both the Chiefs and Maidens were in action at the nine-hole University Golf Course in Missoula.

In a field with six Class AA junior varsity teams as well as Ronan and Stevensville’s varsity teams, the Maidens came home with a second-place finish while the Chiefs settled for fifth.

Big trees and slow greens seemed to slow down the Maidens’ top golfer, Alex Dulmes, who finished the day shooting a 95. While the score was good enough to earn her second place in the tournament, it was six strokes more than her career best of 89 she set at East Glacier recently.

Turquoise Haggard had a good day for the Maidens, finishing with a 115, just one stroke over her career best of 114 set in Ronan earlier this season.

The 115 was good enough to earn Haggard a seventh-place finish. Tiana Antoine finished 10th overall with a 117 as the Maidens finished second as a team with a combined score of 452.

“We didn’t have a bad day,” coach Rupe Paulson said. “It just could have been better. No one really shot all that well.”

Riley Dennis led they way for the Chiefs at the tournament, finishing second after shooting an 80. The score was just two strokes over his career best of 78 set recently, but Dennis told Paulson that he lost a pair of strokes putting.

Alex Killian shot a 93 for the Chiefs while Lukas Conklin added a 99. Overall, the Chiefs finished fifth with a combined score of 379, their best score of the season so far.

“Everyone we have has the capability of going to state this year,” Paulson said. “We just have to pick things up if we want to get past divisionals. We really need to improve a lot over the next few weeks. There is still a lot of work to be done.”
