I just want to ride my bike

The feel of handlebars beneath your eager fingers, the wind rushing through your hair and the sense of sweet freedom with nothing but the open road in front of you... few moments in life rival the exhilaration of your first bicycle ride.

After receiving a bike as a gift for a recent birthday, I have re-discovered the joy of riding on two wheels.

It’s like running, only faster and with a whole lot less effort exerted. In fact, it feels like a guilty indulgence compared to beating the pavement with your sneakers.

But what a joy. Fresh air, good exercise and speed. The speed is an added bonus. I can now cover twice the distance in half the time.

And I love my new bike. I mean really love her. (Of course it’s a she. I’m still working on her name.)

She’s sleek and gold and fast with a fantastically comfortable seat and a handy dandy “panic” button - an old-fashioned bell mounted on the handlebars.

And as if all this wasn’t enough, I’m having a seat for my one-year-son installed. Now I can bring my favorite little person along with me.

Oh, the places we’ll go on my bike. I’ve got big plans that involve exploring all of our local, scenic bike paths.

Every time I see my beautiful bike leaned against the clothes hamper, she lives in the laundry room – no garage or storage unit for this little lady – all I can think of is that silly song by the group Queen. You know the one, “I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride my bike. I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride it where I like…”

Even the sound of the bell in the song matches the sound of the bell on my bike. The tune is so catchy it usually stays stuck in my head for days. I’ve tried to think of other bicycle songs to replace this one but haven’t had any luck. So far, it’s still Queen’s never-ending ode-to-bike ballad that keeps playing in my mind.

So until we meet again, I’ll either be riding my bike or humming a Queen melody. Unless anyone can come up with a replacement theme song for my new bike…
