Superman, Reese’s cup seen running through Polson

POLSON – Halloween spirit lasted past Oct. 31 to the morning of Nov. 2 in Polson, where an estimated 150 participants donned costumes and running shoes in the Polson Pirate Monster Mash Fun Run. Superman, Bat Girl, Wonder Woman, and a wayward Reese’s cup ran around the town in Linderman Elementary’s grand finale for Red Ribbon Week, a national anti-drug campaign.

“It’s about teaching kids to make healthy choices,” said Lorri Russell, who manned the fun run committee with Chris McElwee and Millie Nesladek. 

Russell said the children who complete either the one-mile or five-kilometer run are impressive because middle school cross country runners are only required to run two miles. The five-kilometer race is approximately three miles long. Many of the runners are younger than middle-school age; some are carried by their parents.

“We have a few in strollers,” Russell said. “We’ve had newborns, and up.” 

Parent Shannon Cannon participated in the race with her three children, who were Bat Girl, Spider-Man, and Spider Witch. 

“I’ve done it for five years and it’s a great way to get the family out with the community and work off the Halloween candy,” Cannon said. “Even if it’s raining we still do it. Snow, rain, wind, we still do it.”
