Editor,

Members of the Polson High School graduating classes of 1949-1951 came together this past weekend in Polson to celebrate. I had been asked to do the invocation at the dinner on Saturday evening so I did a brief search of PHS yearbooks to assure myself that I knew the mottos of our graduating classes.

When I learned that my sister’s 1949 class motto was, “We’ve crossed the bay, the ocean lies before us,” I thought I’d include it as part of the introduction to the prayer. I’m thinking that after sixty years, members of our three classes have not only crossed the bay, we’re almost across the ocean, to the far shore.

For the most part, we have enjoyed the crossing; there have been many sunny days with quiet seas; however, at times the waves have been wild and we wondered if our ‘ship’ would stay afloat; but just as Jesus was in the boat which was carrying His disciples across Tiberius (Mark 4:35-41 and Luke 8:22-25), He has stilled our storms too.

The crossing is nearly complete. Many of us, have chosen Jesus to be at the helm of our lives as we’ve made the crossing; having Him set the course and provide for the crossing has assured us of not only a safe crossing but He has given us the assurance of reaching heaven’s harbor; He alone has been there before, Jesus is the way (John 14:6).

My sister reached the harbor in 2003. My brothers and I, Joe (class of ‘50) and Bill (class of ‘51, my class too) are nearing the shore.
