Editor,

I heard a very interesting comment in a news interview today. The lady being interviewed said, “The Tea Party has mobilized anger throughout America.” This really caught my attention. I had never thought of this movement in quite such a succinct manner.

There is a wonderful saying which I have accepted into my way of thinking, “We are never upset for the reason we think.” How true this is. Just think about the extreme frustration that many of us have in our personal lives - money issues, relationship issues, health issues, employment issues, housing issues, family issues ... the list is long.

So, along comes a movement like the Tea Party. It gives people a perfect platform from which to vent their extreme frustrations and anger by spewing out hatred on the government, the liberals, the president, the congress, the Mexicans, the Muslims, the gays and lesbians, their local politicians, their boards of education, the media ... you can all add to this list, I’m sure.

The point is, however, that what most people are really so angry about is something that is going on their own lives and they use a Tea Party-type platform to spew forth their rage. And if is not the Tea Party, it will be some other forum, group, movement, or organization.

It is likely true that behind any form of prejudice is a fear that whatever we are prejudiced against is just another threat to an already difficult and frustrating life. Just give me a legitimate and recognized forum to vent my anger at life in general.

Isn’t it about time we each addressed the basic causes of our anger and frustration by being willing to look within instead of pointing our fingers out there somewhere?
