RONAN – Students at K. William Harvey Elementary School twirled and danced to the drumbeats of the Alec Quequesah family singers in a round dance meant to educate the school on Native American heritage.
“We come here to celebrate and show you our songs,” Quequesah said. “We take care of our songs … We take care of our drums. Our drum is just like our own heartbeats. That’s what these dancers dance to. Some of these dancers … come out on the floor so proud when they dance, it just seems like they are light-footed.”
Champion dancers, including Eastern Shoshone Indians Days queen Stormie Perdash, performed with schoolchildren in traditional regalia before the entire school. The schoolchildren learned the differences between jingle, traditional, and other types of dresses.
