News from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes

BLUE BAY — The 2013 Fall Mack Days Fishing Event on Flathead Lake concluded Sunday Nov. 17 with a fish fry and award ceremony at the Blue Bay Campground. Anglers enjoyed the delicious fish cooked by head chef and fisheries technician Joe Santos and fisheries technician Mountain Wahl.

Mack Days are sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Up to $125,000 in Cash and Prizes are awarded in the Fall Events.

Terry Krogstad of Kalispell was the winner of the top-10 angler award with a 15-day average of 63 fish and a total fish count of 956.

Jeanee Mooney won the ladies category with 411 entries and set a new Mack Days Fall Event record for the ladies. She also broke into the overall Top-10.

A total of 14,330 lake trout entries, an average of 573 per day, were turned in during the 25 days of the event. The 2012 fall event had a total of 14,632 fish, an average of 522.5 per day over 28 days. The 33-day fall event brought in 18,357 entries for an average of 556.7 per day.

There were 590 anglers registered in the 2013 event with 197 of the anglers turning in lake trout entries.

Roger Schiff of Whitefish received his check for a $5,000 tagged fish along with other anglers who combined for a total of 144 tagged fish caught during the event.

Food banks from Kalispell to Missoula to St. Regis have received lake trout processed during the event. By-products of the fish go to a composter for future use in gardens as fertilizer.

Mack Days staff would like to thank everyone who makes the events possible and successful.

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes have produced lake trout fishing DVDs and lake trout fishing booklets that give fishing tips, techniques, and other information. They can be picked up at the CSKT Natural Resources or telephone for information.
